Former Vatican's Bambino Gesu' hospital president Giuseppe Profiti (2ndR) in court on October 14th. Photo: HO/Osservatore Romano/AFP A Vatican court convicted on Saturday the former head of the pope's children's hospital for diverting funds to the costly renovation of a top cardinal's luxury apartment. Giuseppe Profiti, the former president of the Vatican-run Bambino Gesu Pediatric Hospital Foundation, was given a one-year suspended prison sentence for "abuse of power" over diverting €422,000 ($500,000) to fund the renovations. Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, a former number two at the Vatican under pope Benedict XVI, received in 2013 the spectacular apartment, which is just a stone's throw from Pope Francis's modest boarding house. Despite being mentioned repeatedly throughout the trial, the 82-year-old cardinal was never called as a witness. The prosecutor said that the incident looked "dreadful" and was characterised by "silence and opacity and poor management of public affairs". He had requested three years in prison for Profiti. The second defendant in the trial, the foundation's treasurer, was found not guilty. 'The idea was mine alone' Spread across hundreds of square metres at the top of the Palazzo San Carlo, the cardinal's residence boasts a huge terrace with magnificent views over Rome. Profiti testified that hospital funds were used for the renovation with the idea that the cardinal could host intimate dinners for eight to ten wealthy The Local...

Italian extremist and writer Cesare Battisti at his home in Rio de Janeiro in 2007. Photo: Christophe Simon/AFP Convicted killer-tued author Cesare Battisti believes his extradition to Italy from Brazil would be illegal and would endanger his life, he told AFP in an interview. Battisti has been on the run for more than three decades but has lived freely in Brazil for the last few years. He was arrested on October 4th near Brazil's border with Bolivia and later released, but Italy has made a new push for him to be sent back to face justice. Battisti is wanted for his role in four murders attributed to Armed Proletarians for Communism, a far-left extremist group active in the 1970s. Reports said Brazilian authorities were ready to end the protection accorded him under former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva. "My extradition would be illegal," Battisti, 62, said in an email received late on Friday in response to questions from AFP. Battisti cited a decree signed by Lula on the last day of his mandate in 2010. It rejected the Italian's extradition and "can no longer be revoked," the fugitive said. Battisti also mentioned that he has a four-year-old Brazilian son. Asked about his fears in the case of extradition, he replied: "torture and assassination." He said there were numerous times when "I was threatened by police, by military, by politicians including the former minister (of defense) Ignazio La Russa from the govement of Silvio Berlu The Local...

Graffiti artist Mauro Pallotta poses with a "superpope" t-shirt. Photo: Tiziana Fabi/AFP A work of street art that tued Pope Francis into "superpope" will now support Vatican charitable projects through the sale of t-shirts bearing the flying pontiff, artist MauPal said on Friday. In 2014, graffiti artist MauPal - whose real name is Mauro Pallotta - depicted Francis as a superman on a wall in the Eteal City, flying through the air with his right fist outstretched and white cassock billowing behind him. The pope clutched his trademark black bag in his left hand, from which a blue-and-red striped scarf peeked out. When it appeared in Rome in January 2014, it captured the imagination of tourists and locals alike. Two years later, MauPal drew Francis in a school-boy spirit, playing a cheeky wall game of noughts and crosses while a Swiss Guard kept watch. "With the economic and social crisis that hit Italy and the world, I saw Francis as a symbol of hope for all," the artist said. "I graphically summed up a widely-shared opinion of the pope as someone with a lot of power who is also humane and humble at the same time". The images, put up near Saint Peter's Basilica, were quickly scrubbed off by city workers. But the sketches remained and reappear on T-shirts. Part of the proceeds from their sale go towards works of charity supported by the Vatican. Not everyone loved the drawings at first, with some eaest Francis supporters bristling at the t The Local...

The Vatican has confirmed the kidnapping of Italian priest Maurizio Pallu in Nigeria. Photo: AFP An Italian priest has been kidnapped by gunmen in southe Nigeria, church officials in both countries have said. Maurizio Pallu was snatched on Thursday in broad daylight by armed men just outside of Benin City, Italian media reports said. "Pope Francis has been informed about the Italian priest Maurizio Pallu kidnapped in Nigeria and he is praying for him," chief Vatican spokesman Greg Burke wrote on Twitter on Friday evening. Vatican Radio said the 63-year-old priest, who had been stationed in Nigeria for three years, was travelling with a group of four other people when they were attacked and robbed by armed men who took Pallu but let the others go. The news was confirmed from Nigeria by Abuja Archbishop John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan who told TV2000, an Italian Catholic TV channel, that "the security forces are doing everything possible to find him." "For the moment, we don't have any good news but we are confident and will continue to hope that Father Maurizio will be freed," he added. In Rome, the foreign ministry confirmed it was looking into the disappearance of an Italian national in southe Nigeria without giving his name or any other details. Demonstrators in Vienna hold posters reading "Nazis out of parliament" ahead of Austrian elections. Photo: Alex Halada/AFP Austria's hard-right Freedom Party has a shot at sharing power after elections on Sunday, having narrowly lost out in a presidential vote last year. A far-right party has also had some success in Germany, in September becoming the first such party to enter the Bundestag since the end of World War II, but their counterpart in France is faring less well. Here is a snapshot of some of the far-right parties in Europe. Austria The eurosceptic and anti-immigrant Freedom Party (FPOe) came close to winning the presidency in December, which would have made its leader the European Union's first far-right president. One of Europe's most established nationalist parties, it is forecast to come second or third in this weekend's vote and could become junior coalition partners to the favourites, the conservative People's Party (OeVP). Founded in 1956 by ex-Nazis, the party eaed a stunning second place in 1999 elections with nearly 27 percent. Last year its candidate Norbert Hofer narrowly lost a presidential runoff against Greens-backed economics professor Alexander Van der Bellen. Germany The openly anti-immigration and Islamophobic Alteative for Germany (AfD) is the third-biggest party in the Bundestag after the September election, a political earthquake for post-war Germany. The party took nearly 13 percent of the votes, having The Local...

A supporter of the Five Star Movement holds up a ripped Italian flag during a protest outside the lower house of parliament. Photo: Filippo Monteforte/AFP Italy’s lower house of parliament has approved a new electoral law, paving the way for a general election before May next year. Amid fierce protests from the insurgent Five Star Movement and its supporters, the bill passed with 375 votes in favour and 215 against. The law now requires approval in the Senate, or the upper house. A confidence vote was called on Tuesday in a bid to force it through the lower house and curtail further discussion on a law that has been subject to parliamentary tractations for nearly three years. The Five Star Movement opposed the law, arguing that it would disadvantage the party owing to its pledge to never join a coalition. The law permits parties to form an alliance ahead of elections. Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia and the far right, anti-immigrant Northe League both joined the govement in backing the new system, which is a hybrid of first-past-the-post and proportional election schemes. Under the draft law, 225 deputies in the Chamber would be elected directly from seats in which they gained the most votes and a further 386 would come from party lists based on their percentage of the vote. The system is seen as favouring established parties with deep local roots and well-known candidates, to the detriment of recently-founded Five Star Movement. Several thousa The Local...
